Packing for your first time offshore can be a challenge if you are not sure what you will need.
You are probably already a little nervous about starting a new job in a new environment, and since you will be offshore, there will not be a way to run home and pick up anything you forgot. It would be much easier if you knew what other offshore workers recommend. Well now, you can! Of course, you should always check with your employer. They may have regulations about what you can bring and what items are not allowed.
Protective Work Clothing
Most of the larger offshore employers provide PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), but you will still need clothing to go under. Most people recommend three (3) sets of work clothing as laundry service is provided while you are offshore.
- FR Work Shirts or T-shirts
- FR Work Jeans or Pants
- FR Coveralls
- Underwear (The type depends on your preference, but we hear that boxer briefs can prevent uncomfortable issues in warmer climates.)
- GOOD SOCKS! (We cannot stress enough the importance of good socks for keeping your feet comfortable and dry. Hiking socks work great.)
Protective Gear
You will be required to wear some or all of these items of protective gear. Whether the employer provides them, or if you must, varies by the company. Check with HR during orientation about which types of gear they require you to bring.
- Hard Hat
- Steel-Toe Boots (Check with your employer whether you need rubber or leather boots for your particular job)
- Hearing Protection
- Work Gloves
Casual Clothing
During your off shifts, you will want to be comfortable. Do not bring anything that you would not want to get dirty or go through the offshore laundry.
- Jogging Pants or Lounge Pants
- Athletic Shorts
- T-shirts
- A Hoodie (Depending on the Weather)
- Comfortable Sneakers or Gym Shoes (Slippers are generally not allowed outside of your bunk area)
- Shower shoes or flip-flops if you would like to wear them in the showers
- You may want to pack some gym clothes if a gym is available
Toiletries
Toiletries can really make a difference in your comfort while offshore.
- Shower Gel (Bar Soap can be awkward to store when wet and can harbor bacteria.)
- Shampoo/Conditioner (Sometimes available in a 3-in-1 formulation for shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner combined)
- Toothpaste and Toothbrush
- Razors and Shaving Cream
- Deodorant
- Lip Balm and a good Skin Moisturizer (preferably ones that include SPF protection). These are MUSTS in exposed conditions.
Technology & Extras
Some companies prohibit the use of laptop computers or tablets some do not. Check with your employer. You will want to be able to contact friends and family or pass the time during your off shifts.
- A Laptop or Tablet
- Cell Phone
- Small Alarm Clock with Batteries
- Charger Cords for Devices
- A Book or Magazine
- A Deck of Cards
- Chewing Gum, Chocolate, or Mints (If they are allowed)
Luggage
Now you will need something to carry all of your belongings. Keeping everything organized will save you time and headaches while working offshore.
- A Large, Soft-Sided Offshore Bag with Dividers
- A Shaving Kit for organizing your Toiletries
- A Padded Laptop Case or Backpack for transporting your electronics and accessories
We hope this helps you have a more comfortable first experience in the offshore world!
